While Isaiah Thomas led the Celtics with 27 points, it was the
crucial play of Marcus Smart that led Boston to a 119-114 over the New
York Knicks on Christmas day.
Smart was efficient in his 28 minutes, dishing seven assists while
scoring 15 points on five of nine shooting from the field. However, it
was a physical afternoon for the prolific defender that involved some
bruises
The Knicks (16-14) entered Sunday's game with the most wins (22) on
Christmas day in NBA history and despite a strong start, they were
forced to play catchup. At one point trailing by 13, the Knicks were
fighting their way back into the game -- literally.
Derrick Rose, who finished with 25 points, drove to the hoop in the
third quarter but caught Smart on the lip with an inadvertent elbow.
Smart hit the hardwood below and a faucet of blood turned on in his
mouth.
Rose was called for an offensive foul and the Celtics (18-13) were in
possession. However, despite having a late nine-point lead, the Knicks
rallied back with a three-pointer from Carmelo Anthony (29 points),
Kristaps Porzingis' (22 points) three-pointer and subsequent three-point
play and then Anthony's game-tying layup with 1:09 remaining.
However, the Celtics retained possession and Smart drained an open
three-pointer, giving the Celtics a lead they would not relinquish.
The Knicks will hit the road for three straight road games while
the Celtics return home on Tuesday to face the Memphis Grizzlies.
