The presidential advisory committee against
corruption urged President Muhammadu Buhari to re-submit the candidature
Ibrahim Magu as chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission (EFCC) to the lawmakers.
The Premium Times exclusively reports that this happened just hours after the Nigerian Senate rejected the nomination last week.
A
top presidency source reveals that in the letter to Buhari, the
anti-graft committee said the accusations against Magu in the SSS report
were “weak and unsubstantiated.”
He said: “And that therefore, the president should do nothing but resubmit his (Mr. Magu’s) name.”
“That it seems it was just internal politics and it was interest groups fighting back to stop the man’s work.
“And that because there is no proof that Magu took money or compromised himself in any way.”
Meanwhile, Bolaji Owasanoye, the Executive Secretary of the committee, denied to comment on the issue.
At
the same time, Itse Sagay, the committee chairman, stated in the
interview recently that Mr. Magu’s appointment as the EFCC chief would
be renewed whether or not the Upper House confirms him.
The
Senate on December 15, Thursday, denied to confirm Magu’s appointment,
quoting “available security report” sent to it by the State Security
Service.
According to this report, the SSS blamed
Magu for benefiting from the proceeds of fraud from an individual it
(SSS) is prosecuting.
However, President Buhari ordered a probe into the allegations against Magu and other top officials of his government.
