While Fox was one of the early studios to recognize the potential in an extended superhero franchise, it’s since been eclipsed by the likes of Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC’s Extended Universe. Despite falling behind, the three releases show that Fox is still in the game when it comes to comic book adaptations. But, while the studio has had some incredible successes with the likes of 2016’s Deadpool and this year’s Logan, it’s not quite ready to go for an R rating all the time.
2018 appears to be a good year to see just how Fox will be able to distinguish itself against its competitors by offering up three distinct choices for audiences: a tried-and-somewhat-true superhero film with Dark Phoenix (already adapted in X3: The Last Stand), the hard-R approach with Deadpool 2, and a younger-skewed flick with New Mutants. A variety of genres and styles has been a key to Marvel’s success, and it’ll be interesting to see how the tired X-Men franchise fares with its 2018 slate of films. We’ll know next year.
